In-Depth

There we have it folks! Semester 1 is just about to end and the beginning of semester 2 is just around the corner. Along with semester 2, we have the one and only In-Depth project that all TALON students are preparing for. Being in grade 9, participating in this five month project will definitely be a new, but exciting experience. I’m not quite sure what to expect, however, I do know that everyone will put their best foot forward and have a great time while learning their skill. This year I chose to learn the art of boxing and kickboxing.

I chose boxing and kickboxing because I wanted to learn something that I’d like doing for five months. Being the athlete that I am, I decided to add another sport to my list by learning boxing and kickboxing. I currently play soccer, basketball, volleyball, and tennis. I also play many other sports recreationally. Moreover, I enjoy being involved in sports and athletics so by choosing boxing it allows me to learn, do my project, and keep active. It’s a win, win! I also chose boxing and kickboxing because it is something I have always wanted to learn, but just never managed to have the time for. So, when I heard about In-Depth I thought, why not? However, I do not expect this to be easy… but, I am up for the challenge!

At this time, I unfortunately don’t have a mentor. However, I am trying my best to find one that will help me achieve my goal of learning how to box in five months. My goal is to definitely find a mentor in the next two weeks at the latest. Considering that friends and family are not allowed to be your mentor, I have decided to register with a boxing trainer and ask him to be my mentor. If this does not work, I will work hard to try and find a mentor that will help me train to becoming a boxer. I am willing to meet up with my mentor, call my mentor, and video chat my mentor when necessary.

During the first couple weeks of In-Depth I want to learn the rules and regulations of boxing and kickboxing and how they are played (differences and similarities). I am going to register i

n boxing and kickboxing classes which will teach me the basic and fundamental skills of the sport. I want to watch boxing matches online to give a sense of what kind of skills to learn and how to get better and performing certain moves. Aside from the physical aspect, I also want to learn a little bit of history about the sport and where it originated. I am expecting this sport to be one of the more challenging sports that I’ve picked up on, however, I’m excited to learn a new sport that will help me in the sports that I actually do play (fitness, strength, stamina, etc).

Like I said before, I do not expect this study to be a walk in the park and like all things in life things don’t always go as planned. Knowing that, I expect that these obstacles may take place during the course of the next five months:

  • Time managing with my academic studies and extra curricular activities
  • Not being able to contact my mentor consistently

On the other hand, I’m itching with excitement and so eager to start this five month study. I’m curious to see how far I will get with boxing in only five months, but at the same time, also very excited to see my progress within these next couple of months. This will definitely be a new experience for me but, one I’m will to trying. Can’t wait to see everyone’s final project!

Good luck to all :)
